Whether you’re on the ground, or 10,000 ft in the air, modMD wants you to be as safe and informed as possible:
- Airline Choice – It is best to choose an airline that has every other seat filled. I know Delta and Southwest have the right type of seating. Rumors suggest that American has packed planes, but I can’t confirm this as I have not flown on it recently. I can confirm that they usually suck.
- At the airport – Think of it like a museum. Look, but don’t touch ANYTHING. Nobody should touch anything of yours and don’t touch anything that may be touched by someone else. Please be mindful of this. Generally, airports have become contactless though.
- What to bring – One regular surgical mask or cloth mask. If you are 60 plus or if you have medical problems take an N95 with you. I do not believe that you need eye wear on a plane. If you are feeling paranoid and want eyewear simple sunglasses or regular glasses will suffice. Disinfecting wipes are really handy!
- At the check-in desk – When they ask for my ID, I ask if it’s ok that I show my ID without them touching it. Generally, no one has said no to me. Frankly they don’t want to touch anything either. I do check my bag in and let them take it at the desk.
- Security check – New glove or No love. When I go to TSA pre-check they tend to insist on touching my ID. The TSA team all have gloves. Ask them to CHANGE their gloves before touching your ID. They have clean gloves at their stations; for some unknown reason they have not been trained to change them. However, they will change if you ask them and insist on waiting.
- After check – As you walk through the airport use the hand sanitizer that is everywhere, wash your hands every time you touch anything. Boarding the plane is easy. They are now boarding in smaller groups with distance.
- Inflight – Now the wiping party starts! Woohoo! With DJ Disinfectant! Spin that wipe on your seat! Up and down, side to side, till it’s clean and repeat. I wipe absolutely EVERYTHING around my seat. The seatbelt clicker. The tray table. The side arms. The baggage compartment above my seat – I wipe the handle. (Careful not to wipe the stranger next to you, that would be awkward.)
- Restrooms – I wipe everything I touch before and then like a CSI detective I use a wipe or a towel to open the door to get out of there.
- Phones off, Masks ON – On the plane I personally wear a regular mask the whole time. Also, BYOS – Bring your own Snacks. I do not take concessions. If I take a water bottle, I wipe it too.
- Baggage claim – On the way out I grab my bag from the baggage check. Then I use a fresh wipe to clean each of the handles.
It is one big wiping party. But hey, at least the lines at the gate are shorter.
Travel safe. Do not have any fear. Just be mindful.
