SkinPen Microneedling

i_micro.webp

SkinPen, manufactured by Crown Aesthetics, was the very first FDA-cleared microneedling device in the world.  It is designed to improve the appearance of the skin by stimulating collagen production and promoting skin rejuvenation.  SkinPen is known for its precision, effectiveness, and safety when used by trained professionals in medical spas and dermatology clinics.

Microneedling is commonly used to treat various skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Acne scars and other types of scars

  • Neck wrinkles

  • Enlarged pores

  • Stretch marks

  • Uneven skin tone and texture

  • Skin rejuvenation and anti-aging

How does SkinPen Microneedling work?

The process of microneedling is founded on the principles of collagen induction and skin regeneration. Here's a step-by-step breakdown of how it works:

Preparation: Before the procedure, a topical numbing cream may be applied to the treatment area to ensure your comfort during the treatment

Microneedling: The SkinPen device is carefully maneuvered over the skin's surface, creating thousands of microscopic channels or "micro-injuries." The depth of penetration is adjusted based on your skin type and concerns.

Collagen stimulation: The micro-injuries activate the skin's natural healing process. As the skin heals, it triggers the production of collagen and elastin—the proteins responsible for skin elasticity, firmness, and a youthful appearance.

Healing: As the skin heals from these micro-injuries, it can result in improved skin texture, reduced appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, and a more even skin tone. It can also help with scarring, such as acne scars, and can be used to address issues like stretch marks.

Adding PRP Therapy to your SkinPen microneedling treatment

What is PRP Therapy?

PRP Therapy involves the application of platelet-rich plasma, a concentration of platelets extracted from a patient’s own blood. These platelets release growth factors that aid in accelerating tissue repair and regeneration.

When PRP is topically applied during a microneedling treatment, It is able to penetrate deeply into the layers of the skin due to the micro-channels created by the needles. The growth factors in the PRP stimulate further healing, collagen production, and elastin production beyond what microneedling would achieve alone. This synergistic effect results in a more effective treatment for reducing the appearance of wrinkles and scars and improving overall skin texture and tone.

What should I expect from a PRP microneedling session?

ConsultationDiscuss goals, assess skin health, and review medical history with a medical practitioner.

Blood DrawA small amount of the patient's blood is drawn, typically from the arm, using standard blood collection techniques.

Preparation of PRPThe drawn blood is then processed in a centrifuge. The centrifugal force separates the plasma and platelets from the other components of the blood.

AnesthesiaTo ensure comfort during the procedure, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to the area that will be treated with microneedling.

Microneedling ProcedureOnce the anesthetic has taken effect, the skin is cleansed, and the SkinPen microneedling device is used to create micro-punctures on the skin's surface.

Application of PRPBoth during and after the microneedling, the prepared PRP is applied to the treated skin. The microchannels created by the microneedling allow for optimal penetration of the PRP.

Post-Treatment InstructionsPost-treatment care instructions are provided to assist with the healing process. This may include guidelines on skincare products, sun exposure, and activities to avoid.

ObservationSome redness and swelling are expected after the treatment, similar to a sunburn, which typically subsides within a few days.
